Jana Gana Mana
Rendered in the prescribed metre, it takes exactly 52 seconds to sing the Indian anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The lyrics derive from the first stanza of Rabindranath Tagore’s five-stanza poem Bharot Bhagyo Bidhata, or “Dispenser of India’s destiny”. Tagore set the poem to music himself.
A solemn patriotic song that is officially adopted by a country as a representation of national identity is known as a national anthem. In the original Bengali poem – Bharoto Bhagyo Bidhata by Rabindranath Tagore from which our national anthem was derived, only those provinces were mentioned which were under British rule, i.e. Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, Maratha. Those princely states (Kashmir, Rajasthan, Mysore, or Kerala) and areas ruled by the Portuguese were not mentioned in the anthem. While the poem was written by Tagore in 1911, it was adopted as our national anthem in 1950. There isn’t a direct one to one relation between the literary terms and contemporary regions, but with some approximation, we can establish a decent mapping.
